Ellen was chosen as one of “21 Visionaries for the 21st Century” by Diablo Magazine, and has won the Thread of Hope and Women of Achievement Awards. She has appeared widely on radio and television shows, and been featured in numerous articles including Utne Reader and Hope Magazine. She has served on several nonprofit boards including the National Women’s Political Caucus, Sierra Club, Earth Day, the Mentoring Center, KKCR Community Radio, and the Center for Citizen Initiatives. She holds a Masters Degree in Speech Communication.
In 1994, she ran for U.S. Congress in Northern California, garnering the most votes of any person running against an incumbent on the West Coast. She has served as national staff on a presidential campaign. She co-authored Taking Back Our Lives in the Age of Corporate Dominance, which not only frames the urgency of our situation, but gives 75 ways for people to co-create a more positive futurewhether they have 20 minutes or 20 hours a month. She is a contributing author to A Game As Old As Empire: The Secret World of Economic Hit Men and the Web of Global Corruption. Ellen explains the little-known, dark underpinnings of the global economyand the power we have to shift to a more equitable world.
As an entrepreneur, Ellen co-created Quick & Easy Tool Rentals, which was the 99th largest tool rental in the U.S. when it was sold after 14 years.
She has founded/cofounded four nonprofits: Invest in Kids connected at-risk youth to mentors and scholarships. Healing Our Nation from Violence elucidated the profound impact entertainment industry violence has on real life. The Center for US/USSR Initiatives (now the Center for Citizen Initiatives) brought Russians and Americans together for friendship and business collaboration. The Contra Costa Earth Day Festival showcased eco-friendly businesses.
What has been important to Ellen is examining the underlying causes and connections of crisis and transformation in business, communities, and the environment.
